Against the Grain / Men In Dance is a festival that showcases some of the best choreographers and male dancers that the Seattle dance scene has to offer.
It was originally conceived in 1994 by a small but dedicated group of male dancers and choreographers seeking a vehicle that would highlight their specialty and uniqueness.
Approximately one in ten dancers in our North American culture is male. As the minority in this profession, men have sometimes struggled to find their voice. This festival allows them the camaraderie and the opportunity to celebrate their art with pride while serving as a diversified role model for the male dancers of tomorrow. This powerful showcase features the best and brightest of Seattle choreographers, both male and female. They represent a broad cross-section of dance, from the world of classical ballet, to the most current contemporary techniques and ideas.
