Jeremy Cline

Jeremy Cline’s work explores existential issues, the subversion of gravity, and interdisciplinary choreography. He has danced with the Los Angeles Opera, the Lincoln Center, Spectrum Dance Theater, Brian Sanders’ JUNK, Khambatta Dance Company, The 5th Ave Musical Theater, and International Ballet Theater, as well as in many underground bboy battles, capoeira rodas, and circus shows. International performances include tours to the Czech Republic, the Dominican Republic, India, and Singapore. His choreography has been shown at the Seattle International Dance Festival, Full Tilt Dance Festival, Middlebury College, and the University of Iowa, where he completed his MFA in choreography.

About the Work

Modern society has lost the embodied wisdom of its soul, leading to fighting, partying, hedonism, and the will to power. The promise of fame. fortune, and excellence is so ubiquitous that it saturates every part of our waking lives. Any notion of healthy masculinity is disoriented in this chaos, as masculinity and egotistical bravado may be the source of the chaos. But like an antidote, within the poison lies the cure. By honestly, critically, and openly engaging with the present moment we are all trapped in together, we usher forth the realization of somatic knowledge as foundational truth. We can turn away from the screen, the messages, the fame, and the will to power in order that we may dance and be truly alive in the moment. Even if we are dancing alone, that is more fulfilling and existence than the alternative.

This piece was initially created at the University of Iowa in 2019, revised in 2020 for a stage debut on three women, and now reworked for three men for this festival. The original two versions of the work centered around a microphone with a looper pedal where the dancers created their own music and soundscape. In adapting the work to film, I have sought to emphasize some of the digital and technological elements that were only alluded to in the original work. I would also like to mention that the piece has been created in collaboration with the 7 dancers who have been involved in the process along the way.
